Making homemade taco seasoning is so easy and you probably will have all the ingredients already in your cupboard, you just need to throw them all together! At least you know it free of anything you can’t pronounce and omit the flour and it is also gluten-free.
After looking at the ingredients of store-bought taco seasoning, their ingredients like Maltodextrin, Citric Acid, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Sufites, and even partially hydrogenated soybean oils, silicon dioxide, ethoxyquin. Some of these I’ve never heard of and can’t be good for the body.
This is why i decided to make my own, at least I know what goes into and the bonus factor is I can tweak the flavours at little too, making it a little more spicy by adding extra chili or give it a more smoked flavour by adding paprika.
With me being such a huge Mexican food fan, and the kids are totally into tacos at the moment both the soft and crunchy kind we have made tacos or burritos pretty much every week over the last few months. Mexican food is easily made vegan too but adding no cheese or sour cream which makes me happy, we use beans as a base, then some sautéed meat free chicken alternative which makes the rest of the family happy, lots of veggies both sautéed and salad so all around a great nutritious dinner.
Although it’s called taco seasoning, it’s pretty much the same thing as burrito seasoning, so you can add it to any mexican dish even you normal chilli and rice dish. I think I should have called it Mexican seasoning as that’s how I use it in my house.
The great part of making your own, you can make as much or as little as you need, having a big party then double or triple the recipe, just a quick family dinner you could just 1/2 or 1/4 the recipe and add it straight into the pan of meat, vegetables or beans.
1 tbsp chili powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion granules
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp oregano
1 1/2 tsp paprika
1 tbsp cumin
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp flour
Mix all ingredients in a small bowl.
Pour into the a glass jar.
Use about 2 tbsp of taco seasoning per 1 pound of meat or vegetables.
